Near the border of PNG and New Guinea is Sissano Lagoon . . . flooded by a 1998 earthquake and tsunami. This Kundu hand drum – with all its detail and tanned bird skin – is representative of other Kundus throughout New Guinea.
I believe this is made from ggage wood although such wood is predominately in the Morobe Province.
This drum has a lot of history and is in perfect condition. The wrapped band around the drum head is recent.
