A rare Chokwe Initiation Bird Mask with deep wood patina. Generally, animal masks have been used in initiation ceremonies to assist in the telling of tribal stories and proverbs.  But, they were also used extensively in ceremonies to promote a “successful hunt”.

The masks are unique by virtue of their size, very recognizable bird profile, thick dark patina and articulated lower bills.

Bird masks with articulated beaks are regarded as protective spirits by virtue of the acute vision of the bird, which humans can sometimes symbolically employ to anticipate danger.

For the Serious Collector of rare masks.  This mask is MUSEUM QUALITY.   You are not likely to find this quality ever again.   Excellent condition overall.

This stunning Mask has SOLD.  Thanks.  C.R.
