Tapa or Kapa barkcloth is made throughout tropical areas including Polynesia, with the highest quality produced in the Hawaiian Islands. Tapa is make from the inner bark of the mulberry. After being sun dried, it is soaked, fermented and beaten and thinned. Tapa can be painted, decorated by rubbing, stamped, dyed and stenciled. It was originally used for clothing but now for decoration.
This piece is quite old and filled with traditional symbols and artwork. It is in great condition and measures six feet x almost 40 inches.
It would make a great wall decoration or framed and used as a room divider.
