Handcrafted mask of a tortured face.  Raku process which involves hand-shaping of rather porous material.  It is low fired with lead glazes . . . and removed from the kiln and allowed to cool in the open air.

 

Such Japanese pottery is traditionally used to create tea bowls for tea ceremonies.  However, I don’t believe this mask would be welcome at such ceremonies.

 

Yes, they appear to be metal bolts in the forehead.  OUCH!
