Tibetan Buddhist deities are protective figures and defenders of the Buddhist teachings (the dharma). Many are wrathful deities like the guardians of law, the lokapalos. Of them, Vaishravana – king or guardian of the north – is shown here with human form and on the back of a Tibetan snow lion. This is an older piece cast in bronze with gold gilt. I would assume early- to mid- 1900s. Stunning detail.
For the Serious Collector.
