Thai Buddha Seated Beneath Bodhi Tree, Thailand

Detail:  I have not been able to find out much about the representation here.  It is obvious that Buddha is protected by the sacred fig tree (Bodhi) while he discovers the path to Enlightenment.  Notice that there is an elephant near the right leg and a monkey (eating a Bodhi leaf) near the left leg.  This is Thai brass or bronze made by the sand casting technique.  I acquired this statue in 1999 from an American who lives in Thailand and is considered a highly reputable art dealer.
