It’s all in the clay & glazing with its hardness, course grain, and its iron oxide.
First produced in China around 1200 AD, this clay came from the Fujian Province. Japanese monks brought samples from China and the name eventually changed to the Japanese name, Tenmoku.
Glazing of this clay became quite an art.
Tenmoku pottery can be found worldwide. This piece is from a factory in Malaysia but was acquired in Spain from a dealer.
