Near the end of the 16th Century when Islam was introduced to Mindanao, sultans ruled this island of the Philippines and so did the Muslims. In the province of Lanao del Sur and in a local government unit (Barangay) called Raya Tugaya, this sword was found by one of my Southeast Asian agents who is very familiar with the area. This sword was owned by Sultan Osop Tigarran of Lanao del Sur.
This sword was most likely used for ceremonial purposes. My agent was quite sure that the sword is likely from the late 1800s, perhaps earlier. It is sturdy and well – and finely – decorated. The sheath is probably gold plated or an amalgamation of metals. No tarnishing was visible during a vinegar test. In addition, scratching did not result in any flaking or metal removal. The handle did not scratch easily even with some pressure.
The sword is in very good condition although the blade is stuck in the sheath. Included is a ceramic stand with a double-dragon design. The stand is 13” wide x 8” tall x 3” deep).
