The bilum or flexible looped string bags are a durable and necessary accessory in the lives of New Guinea people. Constructed from the inter-connected loops of bark fibers handspun into a very strong two-ply string. Most times each bag is made from a single string. They are made in various sizes and shapes… from large open-looped (for carryalls) to tighter loops (like knitted socks).
This particular bilum is from a shaman who adorned the outside with bones, teeth and other spiritual articles. I am not sure what was carried inside but usually items such as potions, leaves, human bones, herbs, plus other medicinal, spiritual and sacred materials. Acquired from a wandering shaman in the hostile terrain of the Mountain Ok region near the Sepik River.
Includes the metal stand.
