An amazing amount of paint / detail left on this Egyptian sarcophagus mask. Carved in detailed relief, including the sensitive eyes and longer nose, typical of this period. All the detail is there and depending on the viewing angle, you can see different expressions. You may see a bit of Greek influence.
The back has eroded by time and shows how the mask was attached to the sarcophagus (wooden pegs through the two holes). An amazing amount of polychrome coloring.
Acquired from an avid collector in Key West Florida. The collector was not able to provide the collection name from which it was acquired.
We both placed the time period during the Ptolemaic Dynasty (circa 305 BC – 30 BC) for this mask…. related to the obvious Greek influence.
This is a rare find with the detail, coloring, expression and general condition of the face.
Custom Case with hinged door.
