Marajó island, located near the mouth of the Brazilian Amazon River, was the home of an ancient Indian culture (pre-Columbian, 1100-1350 AD) known as the Marajóara who produced some of the most unusual and elegant ceramics ever crafted in the New World. This pot was manually-turned and fired. The exotic images of snakes and frogs – surrounded by etched geometric patterns – are rendered in relief, then dyed and then, waxed. It is a gorgeous piece and in pristine condition.
