The full title is:  Museum of Antiquity:  A Description of Ancient Life – the Employments, Amusements, Customs and Habits, The Cities, Palaces, Monuments and Tombs, the Literature and Fine Arts of 3,000 years ago.  Whew!

This is a first edition from 1883 and it is worth a place on your coffee table  . . .  as a celebrated antiquarian.  It is indeed a fascinating read full of factual, skewed and biased opinions.

Contents:  Pompeii; Amusements; Domestic Life; Domestic Utensils; Employment; Troy; Nineveh & Babylon; Religion or Mythology; Fine Arts; Literature; Tombs & Catacombs; Truth of the Bible.  About 175 illustrations.  7 steel plate engravings.

UNIQUE:  This particular book was part of a deluxe printing.  These books were used by people who would canvass their local areas and take sales orders.  This was how books were sold then in contrast with today’s book tours and advertising.  Inside the front cover is a bound-in section from the Publisher on how to canvass and accompanying suggestions on pitching the key features of the book and how to sell.  Handwritten corrections to this section were made by the Publisher’s agents to correct a probably hasty printing.   This section, in itself, is very interesting.

Some rubbing on the leather but generally in very good condition.   944 pages
