This very hard to find book explores the terracotta art of the Majapahit Kingdom (1293 – 1527 AD) with a range of cultural and political influence that included Indonesia, Malaysia and foreign entities such as Malayu, Thailand, Champa and Kampuchea.
Chapters include: Majapahit – A Historical Survey; The Technique of Clay Making; The Clay Figurines of Majapahit; The Catalogue (Introduction, Literary Sources and Direct Observation); and, of course, a Bibliography.
I became very interested in this Kingdom over a decade ago and sought out this book and communications with the author. I purchased a used copy of the book through a book dealer. The author did respond to my questions. In fact Ms. Soemantri (and her publisher: Ceramic Society of Indonesia in Jakarta) sent me this new book as a gift. I was told this was one of the last copies of the 1997 edition / printing. Even though I have had possession of the book for a long time, I have never cracked it.
