Shona stone sculptures generated a lot of excitement in the art world in the 1960s. They were fresh and unique. In the 1980’s – after Zimbabwe’s independence – Shona art pieces resurfaced and many of the larger pieces ended up in museums and private homes.
This piece came from a private home from a collector in Oregon. I was told it came from a second generation sculptor, which puts the artist’s work in high demand. Signed Erpios. Erpios, Chingwaro, and other Shona artists (who were at the forefront, early-years of this art) saw their artwork drop in value from $6,000 per piece to $2,000 in just the recent years. From my experience, this is a cyclical value and genuine & original Shona art will see a comeback in a couple of years. In fact, you can count on it.
There are a couple of scratches that can be seen up close only.
The green stone is gorgeous as is the abstract sculpture itself. Who does not want an original at this price?
