Old Bagan Lacquerware Buddhist Monk Alms Rice Box with Elephant Designs.  12″ Round.  Mandalay. Burma. Myanmar

Decorative rice boxes are used to deliver and distribute rice to monks.  Glutinous aka Sticky Rice portions were placed in banana leaf packets and then into these handmade containers.  Such containers were either taken to the streets where monks passed by or to temples

 

This ornate 12″ round box is in excellent condition except for some degradation in the inside bottom.  See photo 5.

 

Teak rice lacquerware – like this one – is from the Mandalay Region of Burma.
