These famous “tree of life” statues depict members of an extended family including present and past generations . . . providing support to the younger ones above. There are about 22 individually carved figures in this statue.
Carved from the core of the Mpingo – an African blackwood – with the outer portion of the wood being carved away. Many times a base is left showing the light brown outer part.
This handcarved sculpture is 34” tall and comes from the well-known Mwenge Market in Dar-es-Salaam.
These carved sculptures are found worldwide in museums, galleries and – of course – in private collections.
