Huon Pine Small Biscuit Barrel. Tasmania

Click the photo above for a larger version and more pictures

This little barrel is made from an exotic pine (Huon) and is extremely tough.  The wood dates back thousands of years in Tasmania and was frequently used in ship building and furniture for the last few centuries.  It contains an oil that is resistant to marine organisms.

I commissioned bowls and containers about a decade ago from Tasmanian craftsmen.  This piece and the others were made from harvested submerged river logs.

Deep cracks are common.  Lots of character and a life-long gift.
