This is a representation of the sacred cockatoo birdman from Sepik River area of Papua New Guinea. It is a very personal object and is usually carried in a shoulder bag (or pouch), wrapped in leaves. The carving represents a local bush spirit and is carried for protection and good luck.
Circa mid-1900s. Handcarved and in museum quality condition. 8.5″ tall x 3″ at widest point.
