This is a representation of a medicine man (Nele). A spirit is summoned from the figure and the soul of the patient is placed within. To aid in the healing process, the shaman chants and the burning of cacao beans in a clay censer beneath the patient’s hammock . . . protecting the patient from evil spirits until the patient is cured.
The Nuchus can be used again but ONLY when the soul is extracted from the figure.
They are always kept in a box on the floor of the shaman.
Acquired by a published anthropologist from the Carti sector of the Guna Yala (San Blas islands). The “soul” has been extracted from this Nuchu.
Because of its “years of service”, the Nuchu is heavily weathered and tiny slivers of wood are flaking off from the crevices. Insects are NOT an issue here. If you find you would like to have this confined in a case, I can help with this. Just ask. Comes on a small black wood base.
