Fangyi stylings from the early Chou Dynasty (late 11th to early 10th Century BC).  This vessel is covered with tons of symbols and animals.  Inscription (12 symbols) adorns the  inside bottom of vessel.  Heavy segment flanges run down corners.  Large handles are not typical on Fangyi styles.

This type of rectangular bronze vessel (with roof-shaped lid representing ancestral temples) was used for wine rituals.  Similar ones were used during the Shang and Zhou dynasties also.

Nice patina.  Acquired from a gallery owner in Beijing in 2002.    Age unknown. 11″ tall x 13″ at widest point.
