Champlevé is a technique where enamel paint is applied to a concave (lower) or convex (higher) area of the item.  I have seen a few of these in Christie’s auctions and also in Orientations Magazine.  Most are incense burners or censers and in the form of an animal you would recognize or one that is mythical …. or one that might provide a bit of an identification puzzle.   This particular piece is 19th Century and is in very good condition with most of the enamel still in tact.   Acquired from an estate sale in Bakersfield California.  From my personal collection.   For the Serious Collector.
