In the 13th and 14th Century, the Thai Sukhothai – style art emerged. Sculpture was inspired by Theravada Buddhism that was said to create a new spiritual serenity and a new level of compassion. This statue reflects that style with its subduing Mara posture and an aureole around the body. This statue is from the mid-1900’s and was acquired from an art dealer in Thailand in 1999.
