The Buddha, or Siddhartha Gautama, was born around 567 B.C.E., in a small kingdom just below the Himalayan foothills. His father was a chief of the Shakya clan. Gautama grew up in princely luxury, shielded from the outside world, entertained by dancing girls, instructed by brahmins, and trained in archery, swordsmanship, wrestling, swimming, and running. And, that is just the beginning of the story . . . .

When Buddha died at 80 (486 B.C.E.),  his cremated remains were spread across south Asia.  As we know, Buddhism would spread beyond the region, into East / SE Asia, west into Central Asia, and north into Siberia.  Today, well it is a global religion.

In many regions, Buddhism is split between two branches, namely Theravada and Mahayana.

Theravada Buddhism is popular in Malaysia’s northern neighbors and  emphasizes enlightenment through a monastic life and rebirth.

Mahayana Buddhism, widespread in East Asia, Vietnam and Malaysia, is more accessible to ordinary people . . . and enlightenment is gained not in a single lifetime but in several.

This seated Gautama Buddha – with a halo ring – is from the City of Kuching, state of Sarawak, Malaysia – island of Borneo.  Purchased from a collector in Kuching who claims she has had it for many years.  A relative gifted it to her who had owned it from the 1940s.

Almost in perfect condition.  11.5” tall x 6.5” wide x 6” deep.
