Authentic. Rare. Old Tharu Exorcism / Shaman Mask. Terai Region. Morang District. East Nepal.
Tharu tribal members from this area are nature worshipers. They worship many forest spirits and deities, including the forest goddess. Many of the most primitive tribes live in/near forests and near rivers.
This shamanic mask was used in rituals, festivals and exorcisms by a village shaman. The padding on the inside allows the mask to be worn on the face or top of the head. Shamen could – and often do – wear two masks during rituals.
Carved from a Bodhi tree . . a wood that is sacred to both the Tharu and Buddhist animists. Carved with great detail and adorned with yak hair, copper, and heart, rudraksha and glass beads.
Stand not included.
For the Serious Collector of rare masks.
