Tharu tribal members from this area are nature worshipers. They worship many forest spirits and deities, including the forest goddess. Many of the most primitive tribes live in/near forests and near rivers.
This shamanic mask was used in rituals, festivals and exorcisms by a village shaman. The padding on the inside allows the mask to be worn on the face or top of the head. Shamen could – and often do – wear two masks during rituals.
Carved from a Bodhi tree . . a wood that is sacred to both the Tharu and Buddhist animists. Carved with great detail and adorned with yak hair, copper, and heart, rudraksha and glass beads.
