Detail: In Buddhism, these statues represent Arhat (or Lohan) . . a spiritual leader or practitioner who has reached high stages of attainment such as insight into the true nature of existence and nirvana (spiritual enlightenment). Due to their abilities to ward off evil, they have become guardian angels of the Buddhist temples. They line the halls standing guard along with 500 or more lesser Lohan. White porcelain Blanc-de-chine (from the Dehua kiln noted for monochrome white porcelain figures). Circa mid- to late- 1900s. Very good condition.
